April Is Child Abuse Awareness Month

Category: Elk County News
Published: Wednesday, 29 March 2017

April is Child Abuse Awareness Month.  This month and throughout the year, Elk County Children and Youth Services encourages all individuals and organizations to play a role in making Elk County a better place for children and families.  By ensuring that parents have the knowledge, skills and resources they need to care for their children, we can help prevent child abuse and neglect by making meaningful connections with children, youth and families in our communities.

Child abuse happens to children of all ages, in all types of family situations and across all socioeconomic statuses.  Children are abused physically, sexually and emotionally.  Child abuse occurs here in Elk County as well as across the state and nation.

April is a time to celebrate the important role that communities play in protecting children and strengthening families.

Everyone's participation is critical.  Focusing on ways to connect with families is the best thing our community can do to strengthen families and prevent child abuse and neglect.

Throughout the month of April, you will see royal blue pinwheels placed throughout the county.  Pinwheels are the national symbol for child abuse prevention through Pinwheels for Prevention.  By its very nature, pinwheels connote childlike notions and, in essence, serve as a reminder of the great childhoods we want for all of our children.

If you suspect a child is being abused, call Childline at (800) 932-0313 or call Elk County Children and Youth Services at (814)776-1553.

It takes a village to raise a child.  That same village needs to protect these children.
